Current State Employees
The size, scope, and mission of the Employment Development Department (EDD) make it unique among state departments.
The EDD is one of the largest departments in California and is an economic stabilizer in times of great uncertainty. Join the EDD team to see firsthand how millions of Californian’s are helped each year.
The EDD is a great place to work. There are some things you should know before you embark on starting your career with the department.
The Normal Process
The general process for employees of other departments and outside employees is exactly the same. You must:
- Apply for an exam.
- Pass the exam.
- Be reachable on the hiring list.
- Apply for positions that interest you.
- Successfully interview.
- Pass any probationary period that may exist.
Review the How to Apply page for more information.
Lateral Transfers
Unlike potential candidates that are applying from the private sector or academia, current state employees also have the option to lateral transfer into various positions at the EDD.
A lateral transfer is a move from one classification to another. It allows employees who feel that their present career path does not meet their long term career goals to transfer into a classification (job) that provides movement to an alternate career ladder. State civil service and EDD provisions allow individuals to transfer from one position to another as long as all the requirements are met.
There are many rules and provisions that must be adhered to while attempting a lateral transfer. For more information, please refer to the Upward Mobility and Career Development Guide (DE 8619) found on the Forms and Publications page.
