The Employment Development Department (EDD) has many opportunities for recent graduates. Depending on your major and experience, you may qualify for a number of opportunities with the department.

Careers with the EDD

The EDD focuses on four major program areas. Understanding these areas will help you understand the various career paths that exist. The EDD is responsible for the state programs involving unemployment insurance, disability insurance, payroll tax collection, and job training/workforce services. This is a very wide variety of programs and services, and like any large organization, the EDD also has internal programs such as business support, information technology, legal, public relations, internal auditing, and administrative positions to support our programs.

Accounting and Auditing

The EDD has many positions in accounting and auditing. The department is the state’s largest tax collection agency and economic stabilizer in times of high unemployment. Because of our unique role, we have many accounting and auditing positions available.

Business Administration

The EDD is a large organization with nearly 8,000 employees and over 200 offices. Being such a large organization requires that we have business leaders to ensure the continued operation of our programs and services. We have many classifications and positions that students with business administration backgrounds may be interested in.

Customer Service

Everything we do here at the EDD revolves around customer service. We are a service organization that is here to help the people of California. We have many positions that offer the ability to work with people and experience the satisfaction of helping people.

Human Resources

Being such a large organization the department has many Human Resource positions in various different capacities. Positions can exist in recruitment, civil service testing, hiring, position allocation, payroll, employee benefits, management and staff training and development, labor relations, health and safety, workers’ compensation, employee assistance, and reasonable accommodations.

Public Policy & Law

Policy decisions impact our department daily. We need people that can decipher these laws and regulations into actionable items. We hire many analysts to determine how policy, laws and regulations effect how our department conducts business.

Economics & Statistics

The Labor Market Information Division of the EDD is responsible for reporting on California’s economic health. In order for the division to provide accurate data to business leaders, government officials and the news media they require people with an understanding of Economics and Statistical methodology.

Criminal Justice

The department has a team of investigators to track down and prevent fraud in our various programs. The department’s investigators work on everything from Unemployment/Disability Insurance fraud to Tax Fraud.

Information Technology

Maintaining millions of records every year is not easy. We have an entire branch of Information Technology professionals that ensure the department’s data is safe, secure and accessible to each one of our offices.

General/Other

Some classifications do not fall into any of the other areas or are used in multiple areas for many different roles. These are the General classifications that our department hires. Other state departments and agencies are also very likely to hire for these classifications.
