Today, the Employment Development Department (EDD) announced that it has further expanded language access options in its myEDD online portal and UI Online for individuals to apply for unemployment benefits via applications translated into Armenian, Korean, and Tagalog.

San Diego County workers whose employment or self-employment was impacted by severe winter storms and flooding between January 21 and January 23, 2024, are now able to apply for federal Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) benefits. The new DUA availability follows a presidential major disaster declaration (FEMA-4758-DR) that was issued on February 19, 2024.

The Employment Development Department (EDD) announced today it has awarded $1 million to International Rescue Committee, Inc., (IRC), which will provide technical assistance and continuous improvement services to a portfolio of English Language Learner (ELL) Integrated Education and Training programs across California. These programs help ELLs gain equitable access to high-quality jobs. The grant will be used to assist eight funding recipients that were awarded a total of $17.9 million in August 2023 from the ELL Integrated Education and Training Fund for Program Year 2022-23.

Starting February 15, 2024, the Employment Development Department (EDD) begins issuing payments for unemployment, disability, and Paid Family Leave customers on new Money Network prepaid debit cards. Benefit payments will no longer be issued on Bank of America debit cards. The EDD previously announced it was reaching out to its customers with related timelines and information to assist them in transitioning to Money Network Cards.

The selected organizations will assist workers who are impacted by California’s gradual transition from oil and gas towards renewable energy. Awardees will guide displaced oil and gas industry workers into high-quality careers that offer economic stability and clear pathways for advancement.

The Employment Development Department (EDD) announced today that it has awarded $7 million to La Cooperativa Campesina de California (La Cooperativa), a non-profit organization dedicated to helping California’s farmworkers achieve lasting prosperity and self-sufficiency through education, training, placement, and other supportive services. La Cooperativa will use grant funds to provide outreach, and employment and training services to farmworkers affected at Prima Wawona, and other agricultural workers laid off throughout the State.

The Employment Development Department (EDD) is expanding language access options in its myEDD web portal and UI Online for unemployment benefits. Starting December 14, 2023, individuals can apply for unemployment benefits and manage their claims via applications translated into Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese as well as Vietnamese. This is in addition to the English and Spanish applications already offered. The EDD will launch another update to its online systems in March 2024 to further expand language access to individuals who prefer to apply with a Korean, Armenian, or Tagalog application. These seven languages represent the top languages spoken by working-age adults in California.

Employment Development Department (EDD) staff and local volunteers served approximately 2,500 Imperial County agricultural workers a pre-dawn breakfast today of tamales, beans, salsa, sweet bread, and coffee in recognition of their essential role in feeding the people of California, the nation, and beyond. For 44 years now, the EDD and local partners have hosted the annual Farm Workers Appreciation Breakfast in Calexico, California, as a way of thanking agricultural workers for their hard work, and the invaluable contributions they make to the state’s economy.
