FAQs – EDD Debit CardSM

How will I receive my State Disability Insurance Benefits?
You will be sent a Visa-branded EDD Debit CardSM. SDI benefits for which you are eligible will be deposited to the EDD Debit CardSM account. After your card is mailed to you, you have the option of setting up a direct deposit transfer of some or all of your benefits to your personal bank account. Once you receive your card, visit www.bankofamerica.com/eddcard for more information.

Do I have to call EDD to set up direct deposit for my benefits?
No. Once you have received your EDD Debit CardSM, contact Bank of America.

Please Note: The EDD will not contact you under any circumstances to request personal bank account information. Any direct deposit transfer request must be initiated by you through Bank of America.

Will I be charged a fee when using the EDD Debit CardSM?
Fees can be avoided with careful use of your card. For more information visit www.bankofamerica.com/eddcard.

Do I have to have a bank account with Bank of America to receive the EDD Debit CardSM?
No. You do not need a checking or savings account with Bank of America or any other financial institution to receive your benefit payments.

How long will my benefit payments be available on my debit card?
Benefit payments for which you are eligible will be accessible as long as you have an available balance on your card. If your card has expired, you will either be sent a new card or can contact Bank of America for a new card.

Can I request more than one debit card?
No. Only one debit card will be issued for each claimant.

How will I be notified that a benefit payment has been made to my EDD Debit CardSM account?
When a payment is qualified, claimants will receive an Electronic Benefit Payment Notification, DE 2500E.

If I file a claim with SDI, use my EDD Debit CardSM, and then later file a claim for Unemployment Insurance benefits, will I be issued another card? Will I receive cards for each type of benefits?
No. Eligible claimants will have only one debit card account issued. Claimants will use the same card for both the SDI and UI benefit programs.

I was overpaid by SDI. Should I return the EDD Debit CardSM to EDD?
No. The EDD will not request the return of the debit card. In cases where the money is incorrectly added to the benefit payment account, an overpayment will be established for the money to be repaid.

I was told I was sent my EDD Debit CardSM but have never received it. How do I get a new card mailed to me?
Contact Bank of America at www.bankofamerica.com/eddcard.

I don’t want a debit card. Can EDD issue me a check?
The EDD is transitioning from issuing checks to Bank of America issued EDD Debit CardsSM. Once you receive an EDD Debit CardSM, checks will no longer be issued.
