State Disability Insurance (SDI) for State Employees

SDI was negotiated for employees in Bargaining Units 1, 3, 4, 11, 14, 15, 17, 20, and 21.

SDI pays part of an employee's wages if they are unable to work due to a non work-related illness or injury or due to pregnancy or childbirth. SDI also covers an employee if they take time off work to care for a seriously ill child, parent, spouse, or domestic partner, or to bond with a child (i.e., under age 18) within one year of its birth, adoption, or foster care placement. Note: Beginning July 1, 2014, California workers may be eligible to receive Paid Family Leave benefits when taking take time off of work to care for a seriously ill parent-in-law, grandparent, grandchild, or sibling. For more information, view Senate Bill 770 (Chapter 350, Statutes of 2013).
