What is EZREG?
EZREG is EDD’s newest alternative method offered to new employers and/or their agents to register online as well as to submit address changes and/or account inactivations on existing businesses.
Why use EZREG?
EZREG offers an accessible online alternative to the employer community. In the past, registering for an employer account number, changing an address, or inactivating an account was done either through the mail or by telephone. With EZREG, employers can perform these functions online. Now you can:
- Submit your EZREG information at your convenience which saves time and money.
- Obtain an immediate confirmation message ensuring that your request has been received.
- Save a draft registration which can be retrieved and viewed at a later time (EZREG will retain saved registration information for 95 days.)
Who can use EZREG?
Employers, both new and previously registered, as well as anyone who is authorized to act on behalf of the employer (i.e. agents, certified public accounts, etc.) can use EZREG.
Is there a fee to use EZREG?
No. There is no fee associated with EZREG.
Is EZREG a secure Web site?
Yes. All Internet applications provided by EDD are secure. Any exchange of confidential information to a secure site requires the user to log in with user identification (ID) and password. In addition, the information submitted to EDD via the Internet is encrypted.
What are the browser requirements for using EDD's Internet applications?
The minimum browser versions we recommend are Internet Explorer 5.5 (128-bit) or Netscape 7 (U.S. Security) or higher. If you do not have these versions, they can be downloaded from the Internet:
- Internet Explorer (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp)
- Netscape (http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/default.jsp)
Do I need to register prior to accessing EZREG? Is a password required?
- If you are accessing EZREG to register for an EDD employer account number, you do not need to register prior to accessing EZREG.
- If you are accessing EZREG to submit a change of address or inactivate an account, you must be a registered employer with an EDD employer account number and you will need to register for EDD's Online Services by establishing a user ID and password. If you have previously registered to use EDD's Online Services, EZREG can be accessed at any time using your user ID and password.
What are EDD's Online Services?
EDD's On-ine Services offer a convenient and secure method to:
- Submit your Quarterly Wage and Withholding Report (DE 6).
- Submit your Report of Independent Contractor(s) (DE 542).
- Submit your Report of New Employee(s) (DE 34).

How do I register for EDD's Online Services and what information will I need to establish a user ID and password?
The first time you log in, you will create your own user ID and password. You will need your EDD employer account number, current quarter Unemployment Insurance rate, and ZIP code. Your password should be unique to you as you are the only one who will know your password.
Register for EDD's Online Services.
I forgot my password. What should I do?
Due to security reasons, EDD staff does not have access to your password. If you have forgotten or lost your password, you must re-register for EDD’s Online Services and begin the registration process again.
How soon after receiving an EDD employer account number can I access EDD’s Online Services?
You can register for EDD’s Online Services 15 days after receiving your EDD employer account number.
I started to register my business online; however, I was interrupted prior to completion. Can I save the information I already entered and finish later?
Yes. At any point after providing your business ownership information you will be given the option to SAVE your entered data. If you choose to save your data, you will be asked to provide a password. EZREG will provide you with a Reference Number, which confirms your registration information has been saved. Be sure to retain both the Reference Number and your password as you will need them to access your saved data.
Why did my EZREG session expire?
If the EZREG application remains idle for more than 20 minutes, your session will expire and you will have to start the process over.
When attempting to register online, I did not receive an EDD employer account number; instead I received a Confirmation Number. When will I be notified of my employer account number?
Receiving a Confirmation Number instead of an EDD employer account number means your application required further analysis based on the response(s) provided throughout the registration process. Once the analysis has been completed, an EDD employer account number will be mailed to you.
I successfully registered online and obtained a new employer account number. Do I need to contact you by mail or telephone regarding my reporting requirements?
No. In addition to obtaining your new EDD employer account number, EZREG will supply you with your current year tax rate information. A New Employer Package with your reporting requirements will be sent to you by mail.
How soon after obtaining my EDD employer account number should I make payments and send in my tax forms?
See Tax Payments and Due Dates for specific filing and deposit requirements.
Once I have successfully obtained an employer account number by registering online, changed an address, or inactivated an account, do I need to follow up by mailing a hard copy to you?
No. There is no need to provide this information to us by mail. However, you should print a copy of your submitted request for your records.
Once I have successfully inactivated my account online, how long do I have to submit final payment(s) and/or returns?
If your request to inactivate your account was successful, you will receive a message advising your final payment(s), quarterly and/or annual returns must be submitted within ten (10) days of the inactivation date.
This is my first business and I need help understanding the different payroll tax report filing and payment schedules. Is there a class I can take?
The EDD’s Employment Tax Offices offer no fee State payroll tax seminars; either classroom-style or Web-based. Both the classroom and Web-based seminars are designed to help employers comply with the State of California payroll tax laws. The classroom seminars are offered in a variety of locations throughout California.
