How do I file my returns online?

You can enter and submit your payroll tax information online by selecting “File a Return” after logging in from “e-Services for Business Login.” You will use a step-by-step approach, making reporting easier and faster than ever before. You must enroll in e-Services for Business before you can complete and submit your forms online to EDD.

Refer to the e-Services for Business Online Tutorial #3: I want to log in to e-Services for Business as an Agent and Tutorial #4: I want to log in to e-Services for Business as an Employer for demonstrations.

You can file the following forms and/or make Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) and/or credit card payments using our Direct Entry Programs:

Can all employers use e-Services for Business to file returns online?

Yes.

If I am filing a Quarterly Contribution Return and Report of Wages (Continuation) (DE 9C), do I have to enter all employee information each quarter?

No, after you have submitted your first DE 9C using this system, the next time you create a new DE 9C, you will have the option to have the names and social security numbers of the employees from your last report pre-populated for you.

If I have no employees for a given quarter, do I need to file a Quarterly Contribution Return and Report of Wages (DE 9) and Quarterly Contribution Return and Report of Wages (Continuation) (DE 9C)?

Yes, you must file the DE 9 by checking the box “No Wages Paid This Quarter” and the DE 9C by checking the box “No Payroll.”

Can I access returns that were previously submitted?

Yes, you can view your previously submitted returns. However, since we have recently upgraded from our prior accounting system, some previously filed data that was converted from the old system will not be available.

Can I view my prior DE 6 iFile reports that were previously submitted through the old system?

Yes, you can view the DE 6 iFile reports previously submitted.  To access your report, log in to e-Services for Business and select the account number ID.  Select the “View Prior iFile Returns” link and the prior DE 6 iFile reports are listed in the “Your recent DE 6 iFile Submissions” table.

How do I correct a return that was already submitted?

You can amend returns that you submit online for 2011 and subsequent years. To make changes, you view the original return and select the “Change” button at the top of the screen and enter the new information. Select “Save” and “Submit.” For 2010 and prior years, you will need to send in the Tax and Wage Adjustment Form (DE 678).

How do I file a large return file online?

If you file a large return or you file for more than one employer, you have two filing options. You can use the file attachments option or you can select “Bulk Transmissions (XML and Web Services).” The file attachment option is easy to use and supports several file formats. The XML and Web Services option requires some programming or you can choose to use the services of one of the software vendors listed on our Web site.

How do I file Report of New Employee(s) (DE 34) online?

You can enter and submit your Report of New Employee(s) (DE 34) information online. You must enroll in e-Services for Business before you can submit your form online to EDD. After you enroll, you will be able to access your account, file returns and make payments from the “My Accounts” screen. To file a return, select “Report of New Employee(s)”. You will be allowed to submit up to 30 new employees in one submission. You can also get online help and answers to questions for completing your reports and submitting them online.

Can I save the Report of New Employee(s) (DE 34) and submit it at a later time?

If you need to correct information already submitted, you can submit the employee information again with the correct data.

How do I file my Report of Independent Contractor(s) (DE 542) online?

You can enter and submit your Report of Independent Contractor(s) (DE 542) information online. You must enroll in e-Services for Business before you can submit your form online to EDD. After you enroll, you will be able to access your account, file returns and make payments from the “My Accounts” screen. To file a return, select “File Rpt. of Ind. Contractors” after you log in at “e-Services for Business Login.” You will be allowed to submit up to 30 independent contractors in one submission. You can also get online help and answers to questions for completing your reports and submitting them online.

You will need to enroll in e-Services for Business to file this report online. However, you do not necessarily need an employer payroll tax account to file this report. If you are not sure if you need an employer payroll tax account, read Am I Required to Register as an Employer.
