Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Awareness Day

January 27 is Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day. The Employment Development Department encourages California taxpayers, on this Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Awareness Day, to visit the Internal Revenue Service website to determine if they are eligible for the federal credit on their federal tax return. Free tax preparation sites are available to help people file and claim the credit. The federal Earned Income Tax Credit is a refundable credit. When the credit amount exceeds the amount of taxes owed, it results in a tax refund. People who earned less than $53,930 from wages, self-employment, or farming last year may qualify for the credit.

EITC Awareness Day is a national grassroots effort spotlighting this valuable federal tax credit. Joining the IRS are charitable organizations, elected officials, state and local governments, employers, and others in local communities nationwide to promote this credit.
