Adoption and Foster Care

Have you recently adopted or taken in a new foster child?

Start here to learn about your Paid Family Leave options!

Are You Eligible?

To be eligible for California PFL benefits, you must:

  • Have welcomed a new child into the family in the past 12 months either through a partner’s pregnancy, adoption, or foster care.
  • Have paid into State Disability Insurance (noted as “SDI” on paystubs) in the past 5 to 18 months.
  • Not have taken the maximum six weeks of PFL in the past 12 months.
Fun fact: You can break up your six weeks of leave. You don’t have to take it all at once!

If you’re still not sure, read more about Eligibility Requirements to find out if you qualify for PFL.

San Francisco workers: Your employer may be required to provide supplemental compensation to you if you are receiving PFL benefits for bonding with a new child through birth, adoption, or foster care placement. For more information, visit the City and County of San Francisco, Office of Labor Standards Enforcement Paid Parental Leave Ordinance (PPLO).
