During January 1938, there were 140,144 unemployment claims filed at 62 employment offices throughout the State. Unemployed individuals registered for unemployment at the nearest office, and were instructed to return to the office weekly to certify as the status of their unemployment. Benefits, which ranged from $7-15 per week, were paid in cash. Unemployment Insurance payments were commonly paid in cash in local offices through the early 1970s.
