In the past, employees opened, stamped, and processed employment tax documents and payments all by hand. In 1972, EDD processed wages on magnetic computer tapes, and in 1986 implemented one of the largest automated tax accounting systems in the nation. In 1996-9, EDD modernized its tax processing system to open mail, process checks, and post data using imaging and workflow technology.
