En español

California Training Benefits (CTB) allows eligible Unemployment Insurance (UI) customers to further their education, upgrade their skills, and/or learn a new trade to be more competitive in today’s labor market while receiving UI benefits.

Have a Valid UI Claim

You must have a valid Unemployment Insurance (UI) claim which includes:

Ask the EDD about CTB

Ask the EDD about CTB to let us know if you are interested in attending school or training. To protect your potential right to a future training extension (TE), contact us before your 16th week of benefit payments. If the maximum award of your claim is less than 16 weeks of benefit payments, you must contact the EDD before your claim reaches a zero balance. To learn more about the TE, visit Training Extension.

How to let the EDD know you are interested in CTB:

Report School or Training

Report school or training to the EDD in the week you begin attending school. Once you have notifed the EDD, you are not required to report school or training each week you certify for benefits.

How to let the EDD know that you began school or training:

Note: If you are approved through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) or Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA), contact your case manager or career planner to report your school or training to the EDD.

Provide Required Eligibility Information to the EDD

Once you notify the EDD of your school attendance, the EDD will contact you regarding your CTB eligibility. If additional information is needed, the EDD will mail you a Notification of Unemployment Insurance Benefits Eligibility Interview (DE 4800) with the date and time for a phone eligibility interview, or ask you to provide additional information by mail.

It is very important that you provide all the necessary information to help the EDD determine your CTB eligibility.

Receive Notification of CTB Eligibility Status

The EDD will notify you by mailing you the Notification of Determination (DE 1080) containing your CTB eligibility status, rights and responsibilities, and appeal rights.
If you are eligible for CTB, you will be exempt from the following requirements while you complete your EDD approved training:

If you are not eligible for the CTB, you can continue to receive UI benefits while attending school. However, you must be able and available for work, actively seeking work, and accept work each week you certify for benefits.

Reminder: It is important that you continue to certify for UI benefits while you attend school or training.
