All Unemployment Insurance customers will automatically receive an EDD Customer Account Number (EDDCAN). An EDDCAN allows you to complete registration in UI OnlineSM so you can use all of the system’s features, including completing biweekly certifications. This is the fastest and most efficient way for you to certify and qualify for ongoing benefit payments.
An EDD Customer Account Number (EDDCAN) is automatically mailed to all new customers usually within 10 days of filing an initial claim for unemployment benefits. If that mailed package is delayed for any reason, or if you have lost, misplaced, or never received your EDDCAN:
- You can visit Ask EDD to request your EDDCAN. Select the Unemployment Insurance Benefits category, then subcategory UI Online, and then EDD Customer Account Number. Select Continue and enter your information. We will send a message with your EDDCAN to your email address within about five days.
- You can also get your EDDCAN by calling 1-833-978-2511 or TTY 1-800-815-9387.
Note: We automatically complete your UI Online registration if your claim is not being reviewed for issues like identity or wage verification. You will not need your EDDCAN to log in to UI Online and you can certify for eligibility for benefits. You will get an email from the EDD that says “New Online Account Created.”
To avoid claim delays, make sure your application is complete and correct before you submit it.
To change your claim:
- Write what needs to be corrected on your Notice of Award and mail it to the EDD address on the notice.
- Visit Ask EDD to request to backdate your claim if you think it has the wrong start date. Select Unemployment Insurance Benefits, then Claims Questions, then Backdate the Effective Date of my UI Claim Due to COVID-19.
- Submit a request through your UI OnlineSM account or call the UI Claims Support line at 1-800-300-5616 8 a.m. to 12 noon (Pacific time), Monday through Friday except state holidays.
During a school recess period like summer break, not usually. If you used your school wages to file your claim, and you are scheduled or likely to return to your job or a similar job when the break is over, you aren’t eligible for regular unemployment benefits.
But, if you earned enough wages during your base period from non-school employment to support an alternate weekly benefit amount, you may be able to collect unemployment.
Even though schools are closing early this year due to the pandemic, the US Department of Labor requires all states to treat this year as any other. We are reviewing each claim on a case-by-case basis to see if school employees have reasonable assurance that they will be returning to work.

If you have used all benefits on your regular Unemployment Insurance claim or your claim has expired, you may be eligible for the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) extension. The PEUC extension is available for up to 13 weeks or through December 31, 2020, whichever comes first.
If you use all your PEUC benefits or reach the end date in December 2020, you may qualify for a separate extension of benefits known as the Federal-State Extended Duration benefits program, also known in California as FED-ED. The FED-ED extension offers up to 20 weeks of additional benefits. The extra weeks of FED-ED benefits can only be paid during the extended benefit period, which is based on the state’s unemployment rate.
With the launch of the FED-ED extension, you may now receive up to a total of 59 weeks of benefits when combining your regular Unemployment Insurance (up to 26 weeks) and Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (up to 13 weeks) claim amounts with the FED-ED extension (up to 20 weeks). The number of weeks depends on your specific eligibility, when you exhaust your claim, and how much time is left to collect PEUC or FED-ED benefits before those programs expire.
We continuously search our system for people who have used all of their regular Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits or have a claim with a benefit year that expired on or after July 6, 2019.
If you are still within the initial benefit year of your claim, we will file a Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation claim for you. If the benefit year on your claim has expired, you should apply for another regular UI claim first. If you don’t qualify for a new regular UI claim, we will automatically file an extension for you.
FED-ED extensions are only available for regular UI claims. You may be eligible for benefits if you are unemployed and you:
- Have a regular Unemployment Insurance (UI) claim that started on or after May 19, 2019.
- Used all benefits on your UI claim and the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation extension, or your claim has expired.
- Do not qualify for a new UI claim in California or any other state.
- Meet UI eligibility requirements and are not disqualified.
- Made enough earnings in the base period of your regular UI claim. Your total base period earnings must be more than either of these:
- 40 times the weekly benefit amount.
- 1.5 times the earnings in the highest quarter of the base period of your regular UI claim.
If you are eligible, we will automatically file your Federal-State Extended Duration (FED-ED) extension after you collect benefits on the Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation extension or after that extension ends on December 31, 2020, if the FED-ED extension is still available at that time. You will receive a notice in the mail about the FED-ED extension filed and you can also check your UI OnlineSM account for updates. There is no waiting period for FED-ED benefits.
After an extension claim is filed, you must continue to certify every two weeks that you are still unemployed or are working reduced hours. If you meet the eligibility requirements, you will be paid the amount of weekly benefits on our extension award notice and in the same way you received your regular Unemployment Insurance benefit payments.
As part of the federal CARES Act, if you have a claim or extension between March 29 and July 25, 2020, we will pay you an additional $600 in addition to your current benefits. Here’s what you need to know:
- You do not need to do anything. We will automatically add the $600 to each week of benefits that you are eligible for.
- The additional $600 is for all approved claims and extensions with weeks between March 29 and July 25, 2020.
