The US Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration (ETA), published a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) announcing the availability of approximately $40 million in grant funds for the H-1B Rural Healthcare Grant Program. The grant program seeks to increase the number of individuals employed in the healthcare industry and to minimize healthcare workforce shortages in rural areas by creating sustainable employment and training programs in healthcare occupations, including behavioral and mental healthcare.

Applicants will propose a project design that fosters workforce development strategies that engage healthcare providers and employers in the implementation of employment and training services; offers career pathways in the healthcare industry that focus on the attainment of skills, competencies, and credentials; offers high quality training, such as work-based learning; provides supportive services; and leverages existing partnerships with the public workforce development system.

Eligible lead applicants include employers in the healthcare sector, nonprofit healthcare organizations affiliated with hospitals and other medical facilities, healthcare industry and/or occupation associations, organizations designated as Primary Care Associations, State Workforce Development Board or Local Workforce Development Boards, federally recognized Indian/Native American Tribal Governments, and Native American Program entities eligible for Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act funding. The closing date for receipt of proposals is November 13, 2020.
